New Positions for Two Group Alumni
Dr. Navid Tahvildari, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, has moved to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University in Miami, FL, beginning Spring 2025. He moves to his new position as an Associate Professor. He graduated from the group in December 2011.
In addition, Dr. In-Chul Kim has moved from his postdoctoral position in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, to a new position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at Pukyong University in Busan, Republic of Korea. He graduated from the group in May 2022.
Congratulations to Drs. Tahvildari and Kim!
Microsite on the vulnerability of facilities and communities in Houston to toxic flooding is live
The culmination of a four year project between Texas A&M University and the Environmental Defense Fund can be seen here. The site shows the vulnerability of communities and facilities in the Houston area to the impacts of flooding (hurricane surge, riverine, and rainfall) and contaminant transport. The site also describes the use of nature-based solutions to mitigate these impacts. This work was supported by the National Academies through the Healthy Gulf program.

Former Ph.D. student appears in documentary short on flooding in Norfolk, VA
Dr. Navid Tahvildari, an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Old Dominion University, appeared in a recent short film regarding a flood control project in Norfolk, VA. The film was produced by WHRO Public Media. Dr. Tahvildari was the first Ph.D. graduate from this research group, defending his dissertation on surface-interfacial wave interactions in 2011.
College of Engineering story on Hurricane Ian disaster survey
The College of Engineering wrote a story on the post-Hurricane Ian damage survey work in Ft Myers FL.
Dr. Sunghoon Han
Congratulations to Dr. Sunghoon Han, who successfully defended his dissertation entitled “Hydrodynamic Characteristics Present in Nonlinear Long Wave Amplification in the Shadow Zone of Offshore Islands” on 22 August 2022. He will be working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Old Dominion University, working with Dr. Navid Tahvildari .
Dr. In-Chul Kim
Congratulations to Dr. In-Chul Kim, who defended his dissertation titled “A consistent nonlinear frequency domain model for finite depth ocean wave propagation” on 10 March 2022. He will begin work as a postdoctoral associate at Laboratoire de Recherche en Hydrodynamique, Energetique et Environnment Atmospherique (LHEEA) at Ecole Centrale Nantes, in Nantes, France this summer.
News Item on National Academies / Environmental Defense Fund Grant
This is also quite late, but the department wrote up a nice article on our new grant from the National Academies Healthy Ecosystems program, in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund.
Dr. Jin Young Kim
It took a while to add this news as we were getting familiar with WordPress, but congratulations to Jin Young Kim, who defended his dissertation 16 December 2020. He will be working as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Dr. Kuang-An Chang and me.
